About Me

My name is Rahel—I was born and raised in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Since I began medical school in 2008, I’ve called Basel, on the other side of Switzerland, home. After completing my studies, I pursued further training as an anesthesiologist and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia. In the summer of 2026, I’ll be making a big move: I’m leaving Switzerland and heading about 6,700 km east—to Nepal.

For those who’ve known me for a while, this comes as no surprise. I’ve been drawn to Asia for a long time. Even as a child, it was my dream to work there as a doctor. As a medical student, I had the opportunity to do a two-month internship in Nepal in 2014. I took the friendly people and the beautiful country to my heart. But the many challenges faced by the Nepali people have also stayed with me. In particular, the widespread hopelessness in a country with corrupt politicians, few job opportunities, and a religion that says: ‘If you’re suffering, you must have done something to justify your suffering.’
My wish is to be a beacon of hope for the people of Nepal, and I want to support them through medical aid.

It took a while, but I’m finally able to leave for an extended period. My residency is complete, and now the learning continues as I face new challenges in a completely different healthcare system.
